"If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere,"
Sinatra crooned. "If you can make it here, you'll fail
everywhere else," comedian Sandra Bernhard
countered. Truth is, they're both right. New York loves
its dichotomies. Where else is it conceivable for one
to rage with the stock exchange by day and club-hop
dressed as a day-glo mushroom by night? Where
else would one possibly cap off a posh evening of
Cambodian-fusion cuisine (served by drag queens, of
course) by ducking in and out of crusty mean-street
pubs? Simply put, New York is what you make of it; a
canvas waiting to be painted.
