Temples are the places of worship in Japanese Buddhism. Some of them used
to be large and powerful monastries. Temples, like Shinto shrines, can be
found all over Japan. Especially in the former religious centres of the country
such as Kyoto and Nara, one can visit many very beautiful, large and
exceptional temples.
Over the centuries, the architecture and sometimes even some features of
Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines have molten together to a certain grade.
Some temples, for example, include even a little Shinto shrine.
One big bell is usually located within the temple area. It is rang 108 times on
New Year's eve: eight times in the old year and 100 times in the new year. 108
is the number of worldly desires in Buddhism that are driven away by ringing
the bell.
